UPDATE: SSUF/A opposition faction under the leadership of the Ex-army Chief of Staff, Gen. Paul Malong Awan conscripted child soldiers against their will for front-line combat.
New evidences show that the rebel group has been actively recruiting boys as young as 15 to fight as child soldiers on the front lines.
Dozens of the fighters captured by government security during the military confrontation in Aweil last Wednesday are now found to be children between the age of 10 and 15 years.
Local authorities have appealed to both national government and international organizations to hold renegade general Malong Awan accountable for committing the six grave violation in international law and the law of armed conflict as he orchestrated human rights abuses.
“It is appalling that SSUF/A forces are taking children away from their parents and their homes, stripping them of their childhood to put them in the line of fire where they could die…
…I urge the Int’l community to help the government of South Sudan in addressing such a concern for the welfare of the children,” says Gov. Deng Deng Akuei on Saturday.
