Former NBA star Luol Deng has vowed to require basketball in his country of birth into another level following some impressive performances at the recently concluded FIBA Afro Basketball Pre-Qualifiers.
Despite failing to host Kenya within the final game of the zone five, the South Sudanese had their best ever performance within the international basketball arena, following successive wins over Somalia, Burundi, Eritrea and Tanzania.
Deng, who was elected the new President of South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSBF) in November 2019 has set sight on nurturing talent during a bid to create new crop of basketball stars within the East African country.
Among other things, Deng said he would organize a national basketball tournament for boys and girls within the new future.
“We try to make a boys and girls’ national tournament where we might ask the states to return down with a number of the youngsters . there’ll be tons that we would like from that tournament,” Deng told reporters in Juba on Friday.
He said the tournament would help SSBF to identify talented youngsters.
“We have under 18 boys and girls arising . We also want to place efforts together and put our women’s team together. that permits us to urge to understand a number of the youngsters and coaches,” Deng added.
Basketball is that the second hottest sport in South Sudan after football, but thanks to protracted years of war , the sport has did not devour in most rural areas thanks to insecurity and undeveloped sports infrastructure.
Deng said the he would seek support from the govt and well-wishers to assist fund basketball activities within the conflict-torn country.
“We are reaching bent organizations and also we might encourage the govt find ways to form us work together. Deng said. ” we’ve tons arising ,” he said.
